"This timber harvesting is part of a careful plan to improve habitat diversity for wildlife and produce wood products. A variety of techniques will be used to create pockets of young growth amidst a mature forest. The objective is to promote species (such as oak and cherry) that produce valuable wildlife food (mast) and useful wood products while discriminating against non-native invasive species (such as Norway maple and buckthorn). It is our intention to manage some areas specifically for wildlife habitat through periodic mowing of cleared areas in order to maintain permanent herbaceous and shrub vegetation. Similarly, some areas will be maintained as mature forest. The logging crew is following best management practices for protecting streams and wetlands."
"The management of this property is being partially funded through a grant from the Massachusetts Forest Stewardship Program and MassWildlife."
