The Greater Worcester Land Trust established a Volunteer Conservation Corps in 2001 with the first crew of Volunteer Conservation Rangers. The Volunteer Conservation Rangers have improved the properties, and built a record log of the uses and flora and fauna. The Rangers have identified abuses and they have helped to provide guidance in the administration of our most valuable resources. This group of volunteers has expanded and so have the opportunities. This June the Corps will expand to include a Volunteer Cartographic Archivist for the hundreds of maps used in planning, acquisition and management.
Volunteer Conservation Rangers
The Volunteer Conservation Ranger Program is made up of volunteers from central Massachusetts with a desire to monitor, protect, and manage the open spaces protected through the efforts of the Greater Worcester Land Trust. Volunteer Conservation Rangers begin by receiving trainning in what to look for and how to look for it, are provided with background materials and some basic provisions, and then set out to their properties. A Volunteer Conservation Ranger checks in on their assigned property once a month for a formal evaluation of current conditions, wildlife and habitat, use, and abuse. These observations are recorded in field journals and are supplemented with annotated maps and photos. Each Volunteer Conservation Ranger is regularly solicited for thoughts and ideas for the improvement of wildlife habitat and passive recreational access to their property. These reports, maps, photos, and ideas are used by the Trust's Board of Directors and Project Coordinator to continually improve these protected lands and to safeguard against the degradation of the natural resources our community has worked so hard to preserve. If you have an interest in the volunteer conservation program consider submitting an application.

Volunteer Cartographic Archivist
The Trust has over two hundred maps of various types and sizes. We currently have a 24 hanger hanging map file, a 5 drawer flat file, several dozen tubes for storage, and 1 drawer in a filing cabinet. The collection of maps has grown faster and larger than the original loose filing system. We are in need of someone who loves maps, or loves archiving to make a census of the collection and to organize it into a thoughtful system. The volunteer opportunity could ba approached either as a one time effort, or as an ongoing stewardship of the collection based on the response of the volunteer.
Skills
An ability to interpret unlabled maps for content would be invaluable. A general geographic knowledge of the greater Worcester area would be of assistance but is not necessary. Organization and sorting skills are critical. Some basic catalog of the maps in either an old fashioned note card system of in a FileMaker Pro database will need to be established, and an ability to administratively tackle that would be valuable. General basic assistance will be provided, but the project requires personal initiative.
