WORCESTER, Mass., Jan. 4, 1999 - Fallon Clinic announced today that it has donated more than seven acres of land off of Plantation Street to the Mohegan Council of the Boy Scouts of America for new headquarters, and provided an easement that will allow the extension of the East Side Trail.

Lakeside Realty Trust, which was created by Fallon to manage the property, conveyed the land to the Mohegan Council for construction of an approximately 10,000-square-foot building, which will be located on a two-acre section of the parcel. The conveyance is subject to a conservation and trail easement provided to the Greater Worcester Land Trust, Inc. to allow the extension of the East Side Trail. The remaining land will be preserved as open space.

"The Lakeside partners wanted to do something positive for the community with the land," according to Lakeside Trustee Kenneth H. Kronlund, M.D., who is also one of the Mogehan Council's 42 board members. "Many of us wanted to use it for green space. The property is relatively pristine and is bisected by Coal Mine Brook, a trout-spawning stream. We reached a consensus to preserve part of the property as green space and make the remaining land available for community use."

Steve Charboneau of the Mohegan Council said, "Fallon has made a major contribution to the council and to the community's future. Using these resources today will help our scouts develop the skills they will need to become leaders as adults."

A restriction on the property conveyed for use by the Greater Worcester Land Trust requires that it be used "in perpetuity and exclusively" for conservation purposes, according to the deed. A public trail easement will allow the Regional Environmental Council (REC) of Central Massachusetts to complete construction of East Side Trail, a three-mile trail system open to the public that was built in 1997 by REC. East Side Trail was conceived in the 1980s as a greenbelt connecting East Park on Shrewsbury Street to the mouth of Coal Mine Brook at Lake Quinsigamond, according to Gene Tivnan of REC."The completion of this trail will be an amazing accomplishment," according to Gary Dusoe of the Green Hill Park Coalition and REC. "Thanks to the generosity of Fallon, we will be able to assure future generations access to fresh air and open space."

The land was initially part of a tract sold to Fallon Clinic by the Sisters of Notre Dame to build The Fallon Clinic site at 630 Plantation St. Part of the parcel was taken by the City of Worcester by eminent domain during the construction of Route 290, and part was used for construction of Fallon's site on North Lake Avenue. "This project will help preserve an important green space, provide camping and hiking for the 5,000 scouts in the Mohegan Council and preserve a natural connector between more than 200 acres of land at Green Hill Park and Lake Quinsigamond," Dr. Kronlund said. "Fallon takes great pride in doing something that is good for both the community and the environment. It is a wonderful use for the land."
